Georgia Prosecutor Recruits Top Racketeering Expert In Trump Probe

National Memo logo

One of the many criminal investigations of Donald Trump may have ramped up to another level this weekend. Specifically, the investigation into Trump’s efforts to compel Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to commit election fraud in his favor.

Last month, Fani Willis, the newly elected district attorney in Fulton County — home to Atlanta — began a criminal investigation into the shakedown, including the infamous January 2 phone call. We expected that it would be a classic slow-motion strangulation — the only proper way to take down a former president, especially one with a cult-like following. Things have moved along enough for Willis to empanel a grand jury as part of the investigation. Now, she has brought in one of the nation’s leading racketeering experts to assist in the investigation.

According to Reuters:

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has enlisted the help of Atlanta lawyer John Floyd, who wrote a national guide on prosecuting state racketeering cases. Floyd was hired recently to “provide help as needed” on matters involving racketeering, including the Trump investigation and other cases, said the source, who has direct knowledge of the situation. Supreme Court rejects final Trump bid to nullify 2020 election results

The Hill logo

The Supreme Court on Monday denied a bid by former President Trump to nullify his electoral loss in Wisconsin, rejecting the former president’s final pending appeal over the results of the 2020 election.

In an unsigned order without noted dissent, the justices declined to take up Trump’s lawsuit alleging Wisconsin election officials violated the Constitution by expanding absentee voting amid the global coronavirus pandemic.

The justices’ move brought an end to Trump’s scattershot and ineffective legal campaign to overturn President Biden’s victory and added to the abysmal post-election court record of Trump and his allies, which included more than 60 losses and just one narrow win. Continue reading.

New report exposes Trumpworld connections to a plot to ‘strong-arm’ elections officials in Michigan

AlterNet logo

Michigan is one of the states where former President Donald Trump and his lawyers, including former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, unsuccessfully tried to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election. Reporter Mardi Link, in an article published by the Traverse City Record Eagle this week, discusses events in Michigan in late November — when some pro-Trump GOP operatives showed up to examine election data.

The operatives, according to Link, went to Antrim County, where they “identified themselves to township officials as representing Rudy Giuliani’s legal team” and “accessed official election data in at least one township, according to local officials.” On Nov. 27, Link notes, they examined “two separate paper totals tape” from a precinct tabulator.

Antrim County Clerk Sheryl Guy told the Record Eagle, “They made calls to township people on Thanksgiving Day to set all this up. They were strong-arming local clerks to get in and see those machines. Some clerks said ‘no’ or didn’t answer their phones. And as soon as we could, we sent out an e-mail telling the clerks not to let them in. Then, we learn after the fact, they’d already been in three different locations.” Continue reading.

‘Kraken’ Sidney Powell loses again as Supreme Court tosses her remaining attempts to overturn vote in Arizona and Wisconsin

Raw Story Logo

On Monday, BuzzFeed News justice correspondent Zoe Tillman reported that pro-Trump lawyer Sidney Powell suffered yet another blow, with the Supreme Court tossing her remaining petitions to challenge the results of the election in Arizona and Wisconsin.

Powell was originally cheered on by former President Donald Trump’s allies, with campaign lawyer Jenna Ellis saying she and Rudy Giuliani would “release the kraken” — a term that was swiftly picked up by adherents of the QAnon conspiracy theory.

But Powell’s challenges to election results around the country bungled basic facts, with her at one point apparently believing that Detroit was in Wisconsin. Powell’s antics swiftly embarrassed the Trump team, with Ellis issuing a statement making clear Powell was acting in her own capacity and not on behalf of the campaign. Continue reading.

Exclusive: Emails reveal secret ‘war games’ meeting and other Pro-Trump shenanigans by Republican Attorneys General

Raw Story Logo

The nation’s Republican attorneys general were far more involved than previously known in using their offices — and state employees — for undisclosed partisan purposes over a period of several months in 2020 and this year.

A trove of emails uncovered by a public-records search in Missouri shows that the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA) staged secret events attended not only by AG’s but by their staffs. It also uncovered a stunning array of political activities connected directly (at least in some cases) to official email accounts of the top state law-enforcement officials.

RAGA has already been ensnared in scandal with the revelation of a January 5 robocall urging people to attend the Capitol rally that resulted in the violent insurrection the next day. That call by the Rule of Law Defense Fund (RLDF) — a RAGA subsidiary — prompted the January 11 resignation of Adam Piper, RAGA’s executive director. Continue reading.

Many Republicans want to restrict voting access — but their plans could backfire

AlterNet logo

On February 22, Iowa legislators held a one-hour public hearing on a Republican election reform bill that had been introduced just days before and could achieve what Donald Trump’s campaign had failed to do during 2020’s election—curtail voting options for perceived Democratic voting blocs.

Iowa’s House State Government Committee‘s first witness was Alan Ostergren, a conservative lawyer whose views typified those backing the legislation.

“This bill has needed improvements,” he said, referring to its rollback of early in-person voting (from 40 days last fall to 18 days), ban on election officials sending voters an absentee ballot application, $10,000 fines for county officials and poll workers who err, and harder ballot access thresholds for third-party candidates. “It’s also not voter suppression. That’s name-calling. … No one ever defines what that term means. It just means that somebody is upset.” Continue reading.

Trump Jr whines on Fox News that Republicans did not do enough to overturn the election

Raw Story Logo

The namesake son of former President Donald Trump complained that Republicans did not do enough to overturn the 2020 presidential campaign.

The remarks were a continuation of the “Big Lie” that Trump won the election that resulted the January 6th insurrection and Trump’s second impeachment.

“The Republicans aren’t willing to do it,” Trump, Jr. argued. “They’ve shown that over the decades, they’d just rather lose gracefully I guess.” Continue reading.

Official reveals a right-wing militia plot to ‘blow up the Capitol’

AlterNet logo

Acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman revealed disturbing details about multiple right-wing militias that participated in U.S. Capitol riots on Jan. 6. Not only were they contemplating harming lawmakers but, according to Pittman, intelligence indicates that there were also plans to “blow up” the U.S. Capitol amid the State of the Union.

On Thursday, Feb. 25, Pittman delivered her testimony during a hearing with a House Appropriations subcommittee. “We know that members of the militia groups that were present on Jan. 6 have stated their desire that they want to blow up the Capitol and kill as many members as possible, with a direct nexus to the State of the Union,” Pittman said during her testimony.

She added, “Based on that information, we think it’s prudent that Capitol Police maintain its enhanced security posture until we address those issues going forward.” Continue reading.

Trump caught on camera joking around with famous golfers day after his supporters’ deadly Capitol riots

Raw Story Logo

TMZ has obtained footage of former President Donald Trump joking around with two golfing professionals at the White House just one day after his supporters launched a deadly riot that left five people dead at the United States Capitol building.

The video shows the former president honoring golfers Gary Player and Annika Sorenstam at a White House ceremony that was supposed to be public but was taken private in the wake of the deadly pro-Trump insurrection.

The video shows Trump awarding the two golfers a Presidential Medal of Honor while chiding Player for calling him overweight. Continue reading.

MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell spotted at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago after Dominion sues him for $1.3 billion

Raw Story Logo

Election conspiracy theorist Mike Lindell, who is also the CEO of MyPillow, was spotted at Mar-a-Lago this week after Dominion Voting Systems sued him for $1.3 billion.

CBS 12 reporter Jay O’Brien first reported that Lindell had visited former President Donald Trump’s resort on Thursday.

In a $1.3 billion defamation lawsuit, Dominion Voting Systems accused Lindell of falsely claiming that the company had stolen the 2020 presidential election from Trump. Continue reading.
