Sidney Powell moves to dismiss Dominion lawsuit

Sidney Powell, the pro-Trump lawyer who spread baseless claims of election fraud, moved Monday to dismiss Dominion Voting Systems’ defamation lawsuit against her.

What she’s saying: Powell argues in her motion that “no reasonable person” would conclude that her accusations of Dominion’s election-rigging scheme “were truly statements of fact.”

  • She claims that Dominion conducted a “well-orchestrated public relations campaign to save their business” and that allegations against her are “sparse.”
  • Her legal team also requested that the case be moved from D.C. to Texas if it isn’t tossed out. Continue reading.

Federal Investigation Finds Pennsylvania Postal Worker’s Mail-In Ballot Fraud Allegation Was, You Guessed It, Utter Hogwash

Slate Logo

An investigation by the U.S. Postal Service’s inspector general into a Pennsylvania postal worker’s outlandish voter fraud allegations determined the claims were, as expected, total hogwash. The claims levied by mail carrier Richard Hopkins shortly after the November election were so cartoonishly villainous that in a normal year with a normal president and a normal Republican political party, the burden of proof would have been on Hopkins to prove that he wasn’t totally full of it. Instead, in 2020, Trump and his Republican allies, like South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, credulously lapped up Hopkins’ story. And what exactly was Hopkins’ story? That he “overheard” the local postmaster in Erie, Pennsylvania, hatching a sinister plot to backdate ballots that arrived after the Nov. 3 deadline, passing them off as legitimate, so they would be counted. Trump, you may remember, lost Pennsylvania by nearly 82,000 votes.*

Yes, of course, Hopkins, just minding his own business, happened upon some casual federal election fraud office banter. It was always ludicrous, but it didn’t matter, and Hopkins’ flimsy claim was sucked up into the right-wing delusion that their guy Trump had been robbed and was blasted out by Republicans, well, everywhere. On Nov. 10, Trump tweeted that Hopkins was a “a brave patriot.” Lindsey Graham, bless his little heart, called for a federal investigation. Hopkins, of course, recanted his story shortly after. When pressed by federal agents, Hopkins “revised his initial claims, eventually stating that he had not heard a conversation about ballots at all—rather he saw the Postmaster and Supervisor having a discussion and assumed it was about fraudulent ballot backdating,” the inspector general report found.

After multiple rounds of investigations, the report concludes there is quite simply nothing to the allegations made by Hopkins, who has been suspended without pay since Nov. 10. “Both the interview of the Erie County Election Supervisor and the physical examination of ballots produced no evidence of any backdated presidential election ballots at the Erie, PA Post Office,” the report states. Throughout the charade, Hopkins was coached by the far-right provocateurs at Project Veritas, a gotcha organization that purports to uncover media bias, but is really home to performative scam artists, manipulating people and footage to feed an outrage loop on the right. Putin authorized extensive election influence campaign, intelligence report says.

New York Times logo

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia authorized extensive efforts to hurt the candidacy of Joseph R. Biden Jr. during the election last year, including by mounting covert operations to influence people close to President Donald J. Trump, according to a declassified intelligence report released on Tuesday.

The report did not name those people but seemed to refer to the work of Mr. Trump’s former personal lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani, who relentlessly pushed accusations of corruption about Mr. Biden and his family involving Ukraine.

“Russian state and proxy actors who all serve the Kremlin’s  Continue reading.

U.S. intelligence: Putin authorized influence operations to hurt Biden’s candidacy

Axios logo

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence on Tuesday released a declassified report on foreign actors’ attempts to influence and interfere in the 2020 election.

The big picture: The U.S. intelligence community found that Russia and Iran conducted influence operations aimed at affecting the outcome of the election, but that China did not. The report found no indications that foreign actors attempted to alter any technical aspect of the voting process.

Russia: U.S. intelligence agencies assessed that Russian President Vladimir Putin authorized influence operations aimed at denigrating President Biden’s candidacy, supporting former President Trump, undermining public confidence in the election and sowing divisions. Continue reading.

Judge rips Arizona GOP for ‘groundless’ lawsuit challenging Biden’s win, orders it to pay legal fees

USA Today Logo

Calling its lawsuit challenging 2020 election procedures “groundless” and “disingenuous,” a judge has ordered the Arizona Republican Party – and its lawyers – to pay the state thousands of dollars in legal fees.

In his ruling, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge John Hannah contended the GOP’s team acted in “bad faith” when it questioned the process for auditing voting machines and sought to delay certification of election results last November.

Instead of living up to the “privileged position in the electoral process” afforded to it by state law, Hannah said, the party sought to undermine Arizonans’ confidence in election results. Continue reading.

Trump insiders turn on each other over ‘Dominion dossier’ as defamation lawsuits loom

Raw Story Logo

Someone on former President Donald Trump’s legal team created a “dossier” filled with false allegations leveled at Dominion Voting Systems, and now former Trump officials are pointing fingers at one another to avoid culpability as the company shells out defamation lawsuits against them.

The Daily Beast reports that the dossier was handed out to state legislators last December to give them talking points about how Dominion supposedly stole the election on behalf of President Joe Biden.

Although the dossier’s author is listed on its cover sheet as Trump campaign legal volunteer Katherine Friess, she’s now insisting she had nothing to do with it, and she’s pinning the blame on former Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro for distributing the report. Continue reading.

CNN’s Blitzer mocks Donald Trump for claim Biden would kill stock market — as Dow hits record high

Raw Story Logo

CNN host Wolf Blitzer noted that when President Donald Trump was running for president in 2020, he over and over would claim that if Democrats get control the stock market will crash.

Thus far, President Joe Biden has hit two record days at the Dow Jones. It was something that Blitzer couldn’t help but bring up during a panel discussion Wednesday.

CNN’s Phil Mattingly explained that unlike other stimulus packages, this one was built from the bottom up. Democrats didn’t start with the total amount of money they wanted, they started with the things they wanted in the bill and added them up. Continue reading.

Beth Moore, a Prominent Evangelical, Splits With Southern Baptists

New York Times logo

A teacher on biblical topics, she cited the “staggering” disorientation of seeing denominational leaders support Donald J. Trump, among other issues.

From the outside, the marriage of convenience between white conservative Christians and Donald J. Trump looked like a devoted one: White evangelicals voted for Mr. Trump overwhelmingly in 2016 and stuck with him in 2020, brushing aside perpetual lies and sexual impropriety to support a man they saw as their protector.

However, not everyone was content.

Now, one of the most prominent white evangelical women in the United States is breaking with her longtime denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention, citing the “staggering” disorientation of seeing its leaders support Mr. Trump, and the cultural and spiritual fallout from that support. New recording reveals Trump called Georgia investigator leading signature match audit

WSB-TV Logo

COBB COUNTY, GEORGIA — Channel 2 Action News has obtained a copy of a new phone call between former President Donald Trump and a lead investigator at the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office.

The call gives a new look at the outside pressure that Georgia investigators faced while investigating allegations of election fraud in 2020.

“I won Georgia, I know that, by a lot. And the people know it and something happened. Something bad happened,” Trump can be heard saying in the call. Continue reading.

In Trump’s GOP, They Can’t Handle The Truth

National Memo logo

Even if you don’t like or have never seen the 1992 film, or if you judge Jack Nicholson’s acting technique as, shall we say, a bit much, you can probably recite his signature outburst from “A Few Good Men,” with appropriate volume: “You can’t handle the truth!”

Why are so many in the GOP still insisting that the presidential election was rigged and that Donald Trump, the main attraction at the recent Conservative Political Action Conference, is the “real” president? Why would a 9/11-style commission to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol — to avoid a repeat by the same forces who believed an election fraud lie — be a bad idea? Why all the squawking and attempts in some states to censor a social studies curriculum that presents a nuanced and complete history of a United States that has not always acknowledged the accomplishments and sacrifice of all its citizens?

Say it louder, Jack. I don’t think the Republicans present and represented at CPAC can hear you. Continue reading.
