GOP skeptical of polling on Trump

The Hill logoRepublicans are putting their mistrust in polls as former Vice President Joe Biden widens his lead over President Trump nationally and in battleground states. 

Trump lags Biden in national surveys by almost 10 points and trails him in battleground states like Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Biden is making inroads in some GOP-leaning states like Georgia, where one poll has him running neck and neck with Trump.

With the realization that Trump is unlikely to change up his leadership style between now and Election Day, GOP senators are banking on a repeat of 2016, when polling suggested Trump would lose to Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. Continue reading.

DNC Releases New Television Ad: Exploding

The DNC War Room today released a television ad, “Exploding,” to highlight to critical swing voters how coronavirus is exploding again across the country because of President Trump.

The Trump campaign is running ads about being tough on China, but Trump’s failure to promptly address coronavirus, lest he upset China, is maybe the most disastrous example of a president getting played by a foreign country, leading to a total catastrophe at home.

“More than 125,000 deaths, 20 million jobs lost, and the worst recession in generations. It didn’t have to be this bad. Trump ignored warnings, downplayed the crisis, and put his joke of a trade deal ahead of the American people. Now we’re paying the price,” said DNC Chair Tom Perez. “He put himself and his political fortunes first, and the health and well-being of the American people last.”

Democratic National Convention Invites Americans to Add Voices to 2020 Party Platform Process, Democratic National Committee Releases Further Details on Platform Hearings

MILWAUKEE — As part of efforts to make this year’s convention the most inclusive and engaging yet, the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) today launched a digital engagement campaign inviting voters to share what ideas, values, and beliefs they want to see reflected in the 2020 Party Platform. The campaign will allow anyone who has ideas about the party’s agenda to record, upload, and share their story in a brief video message. This project is the first in a series of engagement campaigns that convention organizers will roll out between now and August, allowing Americans across the country to add their voices to convention programming.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) previously announced that the Platform Drafting Committee will hold public hearings this week. In addition, the DNC announced today that the hearings will cover the following topics:

The De-Trumpification Of America

Let’s assume that Donald Trump loses the election in November.

Yes, that’s a mighty big assumption, despite all the polls currently favoring the Democrats. If the economy begins to recover and the first wave of Covid-19 subsides (without a second wave striking), Donald Trump’s reelection prospects could improve greatly. The Republican Party has a huge war chest ready to fund ads galore, massive targeted outreach, and widespread voter suppression. And if all that isn’t enough, the president could borrow a tactic from the dictators he so admires and cancel the election outright out of concern over the coronavirus or some fabricated emergency.

Playing up fears of Trump’s reelection is a useful get-out-the-vote strategy, but for the sake of argument, let’s imagine that the election happens and the president loses unambiguously. A majority of Americans will sigh with relief. Still, don’t count on Trump — and more important, Trumpism — evaporating like a nightmare at daybreak. Continue reading.

Rising Covid-19 caseloads in Florida, Arizona and Texas raise fresh doubts about the president’s reelection prospects.

The explosion of Covid-19 cases in Sun Belt states is becoming another albatross for President Donald Trump’s reelection hopes — and creating a new opening for Joe Biden and Democrats in November.

Republican governors in Florida, Arizona and Texas followed Trump’s lead by quickly reopening their states while taking a lax approach to social distancing and mask-wearing. Now, each of them is seeing skyrocketing coronavirus caseloads and rising hospitalizations, and Republican leaders are in retreat.

Zuckerberg once wanted to sanction Trump. Then Facebook wrote rules that accommodated him.

Washington Post logoStarting as early as 2015, Facebook executives started crafting exceptions for the then-candidate that transformed the world’s information battlefield for years to come.

Hours after President Trump’s incendiary post last month about sending the military to the Minnesota protests, Trump called Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg.

The post put the company in a difficult position, Zuckerberg told Trump, according to people familiar with the discussions. The same message was hidden by Twitter, the strongest action ever taken against a presidential post.

To Facebook’s executives in Washington, the post didn’t appear to violate its policies, which allows leaders to post about government use of force if the message is intended to warn the public — but it came right up to the line. The deputies had already contacted the White House earlier in the day with an urgent plea to tweak the language of the post or simply delete it, the people said. Continue reading.

Biden on Trump sharing video of protester shouting ‘white power’: He ‘has picked a side’

The Hill logoPresumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said President Trump has “picked a side” after Trump retweeted and praised a video that included a demonstrator shouting “white power.” 

“Today the President shared a video of people shouting ‘white power’ and said they were ‘great.’ Just like he did after Charlottesville,” Biden tweeted Sunday, referring to Trump’s comments after the deadly 2017 white supremacist rally and counter protest in Virginia, when Trump said there were “very fine people on both sides.”

“We’re in a battle for the soul of the nation — and the President has picked a side,” Biden added. “But make no mistake: it’s a battle we will win.” Continue reading.

Trump promotes video of a supporter saying ‘white power’

Washington Post logoPresident Trump promoted a video Sunday that includes a Trump supporter saying “white power” while facing off with counterprotesters, calling his supporters at the Florida retirement community where the demonstration occurred “great people.”

The tweet of the video has since been removed.

The video of a pro-Trump golf cart parade in the Villages, a retirement community in central Florida, includes counterprotesters calling the president a bigot. The video shows Trump supporters and opponents facing off in screaming matches filled with expletives and insults. Continue reading.

In ‘God, guns and Trump’ country, simmering doubts about the president

KINGMAN, ARIZ. — In this dry stretch of northwestern Arizona, Trump campaign signs dot the desert landscape, and Trump flags fly from the backs of dusty pickup trucks.

Last fall, an event called “Trumpstock” outside the town of Kingman featured a Trump impersonator, a pro-Trump rapper and a menu of “M.A.G.A. Subs.” Last month, thousands of people blasted classic rock and circled Lake Havasu in a Trump-themed boat parade.

“This whole area is based around people who have the same thing in common,” said Alan Morris, a 36-year-old who participated in the parade. “God, guns and Trump.” Continue reading.
