Russian woman charged with interfering in midterm elections

The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday charged a Russian woman with participating in a conspiracy to influence next month’s midterm elections, underlying the degree to which Moscow is seeking to interfere in the United States.

The timing of the complaint, which was unsealed as U.S. intelligence officials issued a warning on foreign influence campaigns, sends a dire message to voters on the scope of the efforts to sway U.S. opinion, even as no evidence points to interference with U.S. election infrastructure.

“We are concerned about ongoing campaigns by Russia, China and other foreign actors, including Iran, to undermine confidence in democratic institutions and influence public sentiment and government policies,” the joint statement from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Justice Department, FBI and Department of Homeland Security said. “These activities also may seek to influence voter perceptions and decision making in the 2018 and 2020 U.S. elections.”

Guide to 2018 Conservative Dark Money

When you see ads slamming Democratic candidates and painting a bleak picture of the future (fear is the only thing they seem to have to sell people), here’s a list so you know where they’re really coming from:

Americans for Prosperity (AFP) — This conservative/libertarian organization is funded by the billionaire Koch brothers (David and Charles). It was a major force in creating the tea party movement as an “astroturf” organization (fake grassroots).  They’ve had offices in our area, have hired field staff and are doing mailings in addition to television ads.

‘Enough Is Enough’: Former Republican Party Leader Says He’s Voting Blue In November

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Randy Johnson was on the Hennepin County Board for more than 40 years and a Republican party leader for more than 50 years, but now, he says he doesn’t recognize his party.

“I haven’t left the Republican party; the Republican party left me,” Johnson said.

Sitting in the backyard of his Bloomington home, Johnson says he wishes it were different, but the longtime elected official and Republican activist says the party of President Trump is not his party.

What Republican Whiners Dread Is Democracy – Not ‘Mob Rule’

Donald Trump flanked by Mike Pence and John Kelly

To hear some people tell it, America stands at the edge of a dangerous precipice. No less an authority than Donald J. Trump, the nation’s leading exponent of racial grievance theory, fears for the safety of the republic.

Marauding bands of women in silly pink hats have the commander-in-chief spooked. “You don’t hand matches to an arsonist,” he told a Kansas rally the other day “and you don’t give power to an angry left-wing mob—and that’s what they’ve become.”

Democrats, he means.

Religious left? Faith groups get involved in politics

Doug Pagitt, executive director of Vote Common Good, and pastor at Solomon’s Porch, a holistic missional Christian community in Minneapolis, formerly a church and now a registered nonprofit, speaks at a rally at Veterans Park in Richfield on Wednesday. Credit: Tony Saunders, MPR News

Churches turned Minneapolis minister Doug Pagitt away, so on Wednesday, he delivered a sermon of sorts outside in the frigid rain.

He didn’t quote heavily from scripture or hold up the Bible. Instead, he asked the more than 100 people gathered in a park in Richfield to get out and vote this fall — and vote for Democrats.

“We are here to raise people’s voices,” Pagitt told the crowd. “Even if you have to come out on a blistering, cold, Christmas-feeling day like this.”
